Mt Kilimanjaro Treks

A Mt Kilimanjaro trek is one of the most popular tourist activities offered in Tanzania. What makes this such an attraction is that reaching the summit is a possibility for a reasonably fit person. It is one of the "Seven Summits" - the collection of the highest summits in each continent. Of the seven, Mt Kilimanjaro is the fourth highest but is considered the easiest to climb. Indeed it is the highest mountain in the world that can be climbed without specialized gear and techniques. It is considered a "walk up" mountain. Does that mean that it is easy? No way! It is a serious undertaking that demands that you respect the conditions. By far the biggest challenge is dealing with the high altitude. At the top of Mt Kilimanjaro the available oxygen is only half of that at sea-level. Altitude sickness can be deadly and must be diagnosed early on. It is therefore important to have a well-trained and well-experienced guide team. Nature Protector Adventures has some of the best guides on the mountain. By choosing Nature Protector Adventures you will be in good hands for your best chance of reaching the "Roof of Africa". Nature Protector Adventures offers a wide variety of Mt Kilimanjaro treks. From 1 - 2 day non-summit treks to 5 - 9 day summit itineraries. The longer the time spent of the mountain, the greater chance your body has to adjust to the altitude. We recommend choosing as long of an itinerary is you can for the best chance of a successful summit.

Route Choices

Mt Kilimanjaro Route Map

There are several routes which can take you to the top of Mt Kilimanjaro. The itineraries range in length from 5 - 9 days. As mentioned previously, longer itineraries will give you a better chance of acclimatizing to the altitude, increasing your chance of a successful summit. Of the routes, one route is noticeably different than the others. Marangu Route, the original route on Kilimanjaro, has overnights in dormitory style mountain huts with solar powered lighting. All other routes are camping routes. Marangu Route is also the shortest route, with itineraries of 5 or 6 days. This route also is the only route where the path down the mountain follows the path going up the mountain. This makes the camps more crowded and there is also less variation in scenery.

The most scenic routes are Lemosho Route and Northern Circuit Route. They are both long routes with high success rates. The most difficult route is Umbwe Route. It is a short steep route that should only be attempted by seasoned and fit trekkers. This route is not crowded at the start but merges with Machame and Lemosho Routes.

Kilimanjaro can be climbed anytime throughout the year but from mid March - May there is a lot of precipitation that will make the trek more challenging. The northern side of the mountain receives less precipitation making Rongai and Northern Circuit Routes worth considering. The experts at Nature Protector Adventures are happy to assist you in making your itinerary choice for your dream adventure.

The Marangu Route option will take you up to Horombo Hut at an altitude of 3807m before returning back down. The Lemosho Route option will take you up to Shira One Camp at an altitude of 3500m.

Shira Plateau is one of the highest plateaus on earth at 2485m. This trek starts at Londerossi Gate of Lemosho Route and has overnight at Shira Plateau Camp. The next morning can be spend exploring the area before returning to the park gate in the afternoon.

After breakfast we will pick you up at your hotel and drive to Marangu Gate at Mt Kilimanjaro National Park. After registration procedures you along with your English speaking guide will go on a lovely, but sometimes wet hike through the rainforest. When reaching Mandara Hut, you will enjoy a lunch. Afterwards you can proceed a bit further to a scenic overlook of Maundi Crater (elevation 2760m). From there it will be time to hike back to the park gate where our vehicle will be waiting to take you back to your hotel.

Important Trekking Information

Safety
Keeping you safe during your Kilimanjaro trek is the most important task that Nature Protector Adventures has. Before the trek there will be a briefing with your guide. All questions will be answered. We will need to inquire about any health issues that may affect your safety while on the mountain. There will be twice daily health checks for each climber. The biggest cause of illness on the mountain is Acute Altitude Sickness caused by the body not adapting to the lesser available oxygen at higher altitudes. Our guides are well trained to detect early symptoms and many times by adjusting the pace of the trek it can be kept to a level that will not keep you from reaching the summit. At times though it may be determined that a climber should abandon the trek. In most cases, being helped down the mountain by the guide/assistant guide will show immediate relief once a lower altitude is reached. In more severe cases, being carried down by a stretcher may be required and in the most severe cases, we will call for a helicopter rescue. Even in groups as small as 2 people there will be a capable assistant guide present who will either help the disabled trekker down the mountain or continue with the rest of the group to the summit. Many people chose to use Diamox, a drug which lessens the problems caused by high altitude. At the briefing, your guide can answer any questions that you may have on this. Diamox is easily obtained in pharmacies in Moshi. On the mountain your guide will have emergency oxygen available. Our guides are all trained Wilderness First Responders (WFR).

Packing List
During your trek you will be passing through several climate zones, so efficient packing is important. There will be an equipment check before your trek begins to insure that you are well prepared. All items need for a climb can be rented locally. The packing list for Mt Meru is identical to Kilimanjaro but quantities can be reduced according to the fewer days required.

All items can be rented locally of good quality. There will be an equipment check before your trek starts to insure you are properly prepared.

Mountain Diet
It takes a lot of energy to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro. It will be important to eat well and eat much. One of the main issues with high altitude is the onset of nausea and loss of appitite. Therefore all meals much be easily digestable and appealing. Nature Protector Adventures Mountain Chefs are well experienced at providing such a diet. Special requests such as vegetarian or gluten free diets can be catered to as long as we are aware of this before the start of the trek. If only part of your group requires a special diet, it will not affect what the rest of the group eats.

It is also important that you drink a large amount of water while on the mountain with 5L/day being the goal. We will provide you with purified drinking water while on the mountain.

Staff Tips
You will undoubtedly amazed at how hard each of the mountain crew works during your trek. And while by definition, tipping is an optional practice, it is an important part of the crews income. We suggest your group tip the head guide $20 - $30/day, each assistant guide & chef $15 - $20/day, and each porter $8 - $10/day. This amount divided up among the number of participants in your group. As an example, for an 8 day itinerary the head guide tip is recommended at $160 - $240 total. If there are 4 participants in your group that would be $40 - $60/trekker. Tips can be in any currency exchangable at the bank and unneeded equipment such as boots, hiking poles, etc also makes a welcome tip. Tips cannot be made by credit/debit card since the government would tax the company on this amount. But we can take you to an ATM where you can make a cash withdrawal. The tipping ceremony will be done once back in Moshi so you will not need to bring any money with you on the mountain

Your luggage and valuables will be stored in a secured storage area at your hotel while you are on the mountain

Yes. For approximately $300/person an extra day can be added. Please note that if you have a safari or Zanzibar trip scheduled afterwards, this can be troublesome for your accommodations or flight.

Yes, Kilimanjaro National Park recently made it a priority to have internet coverage all the way to the top of Kilimanjaro. But there may be spotty signal strength in certain areas. Your guide will have a phone that will always be able to reach our office in case of emergencies.

Other Treks

Tanzania has some excellent opportunities for single day and multi-day treks. The experts at Nature Protector Adventures will be happy to create a bespoke itinerary for you. If you would like more options than what are listed here, please contact us for further ideas.

The Usambara Mountains are located in northeastern Tanzania. The mountains reach a height of 2289m (75,00ft). These mountains provide an excellent opportunity for observing wildlife - African plains safari animals such as lions are not found here so it is a safe hiking environment without an armed guide. There are several nice villages and small towns with lodges for overnight and there are some campsites also available. Located inside the Usambara Mountains is Amani Nature Reserve, a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve and among the top bird watching destinations in the world.

Mt Longido is located to the west of Mt Kilimanjaro and reaches a height of 2,637m (8,651ft). From the summit, it is possible to see Mt Kilimanjaro, Mt Meru, and Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano. The elevation gain is 1,300m and it is a rather steep trek. The hike to the summit takes about 5 hours and the descent takes 2-3 hours. It is possible to do as a day trip but there is also a nice opportunity to camp overnight near the summit. This is considered a sacred mountain for the traditional Maasai religion. Contact us for more details or to creqte an itinerary that includes this option.

Ol Doinyo Lengai is an active volcano just to the south of Lake Natron which is east of the Serengeti near the Kenyan border. Views of the flamingo covered lake with the often smoldering volcano in the background is a memorable view. This volcano is highly studied because it is unique in the world for having a different lava type. Without going into the technical aspects, it is cooler than other lava (only 575°C/1050°F) and the lava is fast flowing. The volcano is a holy site in the traditional Maasai religion and is known as "The mountain of god". It can be climbed in a day but is a very difficult climb. Temperatures in the area frequently reach over 40°C/104°F and with no shade, steep grade, loose gravel and dust; the climb is done in the nighttime. Because the volcano is active, there is no guarentee until the day of the climb that the climb will be permitted. It is done with a local Maasai guide. Many consider this a tougher climb than Kilimanjaro, being steep with lots of scrambling. If you are interested in this challenge, we can give you full details upon request. This destination can be part of a multi-day walking safari itinerary.
